With our first article (found Here) we started delving into the lore of Sylvanas and learned about her time as Ranger-General of Quel’Thalas. However, that was but a miniscule fraction of Sylvanas and her life, and we’re now going to go even further than we did before.
See, Sylvanas currently doesn’t look a whole hell of a lot like when she was Ranger-General. Her hair is about the same color, and she’s still got that booty, but that’s about it. Her eyes have changed color, and her skin even has as well. How did this happen you ask? Well, to put it simply…she became Forsaken. Now what does THAT mean? Well, to answer that question we need to go back a bit.
After the second war was over and the Burning Legion was repelled, the famous Arthas Menethil, Prince of Lordaeron, was sent to the north to deal with a plague, one which not only killed all those who fell to it, but also resurrected those who did as undead servants. Arthas killed the necromancer responsible for the plague, Kel’Thuzad, but was unable to stop the plague from spreading. Resorting to more and more desperate measures, he finally ended up taking control of an icy sword with glorious power named Frostmourne. Using the sword, he finally was able to kill the demon Mal’Ganis, who was responsible for the plague. Unfortunately for him, by picking up Frostmourne Arthas had fallen to the Lich King, who was able to guide and take control of Arthas. And for this reason, Arthas went back to get Kel’Thuzad’s body, which he intended to restore to life using the elven Sunwell in Quel’Thalas.
There was only one thing stopping him from this…Sylvanas.
Sylvanas only learned of Arthas descent into madness when he appeared at her doorstep, she fought valiantly and held him off for quite a period of time, but Arthas was too powerful and eventually killed her – and for her “insolence” ripped her soul out of her body, turning her into a banshee – a creature manifested of the pain she felt as her soul was ripped from her body, able to give voice to that pain to cause pain to others.
Soon afterwards, Arthas put an end to the Elven King and used the Sunwell to resurrect Kel’Thuzad, putting an end to the elven kingdom of Quel’Thalas once and for all. Sylvanas was quickly realized to be an adept lieutenant by Arthas, and she was used for many things as a Banshee. She always served him, but had truly never become loyal to Arthas and still hated him for what he had done to her people. Realizing that his hold on her was weakening, she kept this a secret from him and continued to serve him loyally until the Dreadlords – powerful undead – were threatened by Arthas and fled him, going to Sylvanas for help. They proposed an alliance to kill Arthas, and she accepted, though on her own terms. With their help Sylvanas was able to recover her body and set a plan to kill Arthas. The plan almost succeeded as well – but Kel’Thuzad intervened at the last moment and was able to save Arthas.
No longer under Arthas’s control, and having driven him away, Sylvanas was once again her own person. But the remaining Dreadlords would not have her stay that way for long, and Varimathras came to her with a proposal before too long – one that essentially amounted to joining his forces or dying. Sylvanas was adamant, however, that she would not so quickly give up her freedom. Knowing an attack was imminent, she set to work raising an army with her banshee’s possessing those creatures around her that would be able to help – Murlocs, Ogres, and others joined her and she was easily able to defeat Varimathras with her army. Varimathras pleaded for his life in return for assistance dealing with the 2nd of the Dreadlords, Detheroc. She and her army were able to defeat them by cloud of night, sweeping into the city they were occupying and killing them by dark, and in the process freeing the human mind-slaves Detheroc had been keeping. Agreeing to give them the city of the last Dreadlord when they killed him, Sylvanas entered into an alliance with Garithos, the human. They quickly marched on the Capital City where Sylvanas made a passionate speech in regards to her fellow undead, and for the first time recognized that they, as a people were Forsaken. Taking the Capital City in the morning, Sylvanas forced Varimathras to kill the last remaining Dreadlord, Balnazzar, in proof of loyalty, which he did.
Then she made a proclamation to the gathered Forsaken. As undead, they were unwanted and reviled by most of the world. But together, they were powerful, and they would rule the Plaguelands and stake out their own destiny, where none could get in their way.
