Warcraft Lore: Sylvanas (Part 1)

Sylvanas, leader of the Horde and Forsaken. Ruthless, intimidating, and with a lust for power that rivals the best. She’s not just a pretty face – Sylvanas is a character with a rich background of lore.

Sylvanas as a Ranger-General during the second war.

Originally under the rule of the Sunstriders, Sylvanas and her sister Alleria were two of the best Ranger-Generals in the elven kingdom of Quel’Thalas – they were responsible for protecting the kingdom from the nearby Amani trolls and did so admirably. Their leader, Zul’jin was even captured near the end of the First War – until the Horde, seeking his alliance, rescued him. During the Second War both the elves and trolls mostly stayed out of the fighting – King Anasterian Sunstrider considered The Horde to be beneath his and his peoples notice. He didn’t consider them to be a threat at all, right up until the trolls and Horde nearly succeeded in breaking through Quel’Thalas.

But the elves, despite being pushed to the brink of extinction weren’t without their magic, and despite the alliance of Horde and trolls best efforts, they were unable to get past the magical barriers erected by the elves. Furious at the delay, this was the straw that broke the camel’s back and the Horde leader Doomhammer chose to retreat in order to attempt to destroy the human Alliance that had been a thorn in his side this entire time.

The Amani, however, refused to give up after coming so close to the destruction of their hated enemies. Zul’jin and his trolls would continue to lay siege to the kingdom of Quel’Thalas and Silvermoon city. However they are eventually beaten back by the ranger-generals, including Sylvanas and notably Halduron Brightwing, who has the chance to kill Zul’jin, but tortures him instead, leading to Zul’jin’s famous eye gouging and becoming one armed. Zul’jin manages to escape after a raiding party of trolls engage the elf encampment, and the elves, for the most part, regroup and rebuild their kingdom.

Thus ends the Second War, and this article. We’ve barely reached the tip of the iceberg, but I hoped you enjoyed reading about a lesser known aspect of the the current Horde Warchief.
