During latest BlizzCon, Blizzard has announced that sometime in 2019, they will be launching official World of Warcraft Vanilla servers which all players who have an active World of Warcraft subscription will be able to experience if they chose to. These vanilla servers will offer the players the ability to experience the first version of World of Warcraft just as it was back in the early days of 2004. But how does vanilla wow differ from the World of Warcraft that we have available today and is there anything that we can do to prepare ourselves for it? These are the questions that we will be attempting to answer in this article so without further ado, let’s get straight into it.
When it comes to questing, the core concept will mostly remain the same as we know it today, however, there are a couple of very important changes that players will notice immediately. Quest markers and locations will no longer be displayed on the map or minimap, so players will have to arm themselves with patience, read the quest logs and explore the world in order to complete even the simplest of quests. Another change that will occur is the fact that the quest mobs will no longer provide you with an indicator that they are connected to a certain quest, which means that once again, players will need to consult the quest log in order to know which mobs they need to kill.
The whole talent system as we know it today is fairly straight forward and offers the players three choices in each row which are more or less evenly balanced, however, that is not how vanilla wow talents will work. In vanilla, players will be presented with tree specializations and a huge talent tree in each of them. Each level will award one talent point which they will be able to spend wherever they choose, which means hybrid builds and unique specializations will be available and different playstyles will be possible for different classes.
Learning your character’s spells and abilities will be quite different from what we know today. Each ability will have its own level and will become stronger as it’s level rises. Furthermore, each ability will have to be purchased from your class trainer which means that a lot of your gold will be channeled towards leveling your spells and abilities during leveling.
Gold will not be as inflated as it currently is on live servers. In fact, it will be extremely hard to come by, and you will find yourself constantly in need of it. Collecting and selling even the cheapest of items will make a huge difference when it comes to your income, and you might find yourself struggling to get even the cheapest of commodities such as low-level mounts, so spend wisely.
Professions in vanilla wow will have a lot more impact on your gameplay and your livelihood. Picking up first aid will provide you with the ability to create bandages which you can use to heal up after a battle or even in the middle of one and will sometimes be the difference between life and death. Other professions will let you gain aces to rare materials which you can sell on the auction house for profit or will let you create decent pieces of gear for your character since gear will be a lot harder to come by.
Traveling between zones will be a long task since you will be doing most of it on foot. The slowest mount that you can purchase will become available at level 40 but will cost you a pretty penny so just reaching level 40 doesn’t guarantee that you will be able to get a mount. Getting another player to enchant your boots with some movement speed might be a good investment, considering that you will walk around most of the time.
Another thing that will greatly differ from today’s version of WoW is the weapon skills. In vanilla wow, each weapon that the player can use will have its own skill level which will need to be raised by constantly using the specific weapon. Raising the level of a weapon skill will increase the hit chance of it and thus increase your DPS with it.
Other Important Stuff
Another thing that will be missing in vanilla wow is the cross-realm gameplay. Players will pretty much be stuck to a single server and in such conditions, the reputation or notoriety of a player will impact his/her chances of getting into raids and other social aspects of the game.
While we do know a lot about vanilla wow, there is not much that we can do in order to prepare ourselves for it. It is important that players who wish to raid gather the required gear as quickly as possible, as well as get attuned to the raids, but other than that, there is not much that players can do at the moment.
Official Blizzard WoW Vanilla Roadmap Post:
Phase 1 (Classic Launch)
Darkmoon deck drops begin
Ahn’Qiraj War Effort begins
Ahn’Qiraj raids open when the war effort dictates
Dungeon loot reconfiguration: Tier 0.5 Dungeon gear, Relics, drop rates and location changes
We haven’t yet determined exactly when phases 2-6 will occur, and PvP content is notably missing from the list above. That’s because we’re still evaluating our options regarding PvP rewards, as they also changed over time (both in power and in terms of which PvP reward items were available).
